Introduction: The Genesis of The Atlanta Tapes
Between 1979 and 1981, a series of audio tapes were recorded, capturing candid conversations, reflections, and personal stories that offer a vivid glimpse into a specific moment in time. These recordings, made quietly, privately, and without any initial intention for public dissemination, constitute a valuable primary source for understanding the social dynamics, cultural trends, and individual perspectives of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Decades later, in 2025, these tapes are being carefully transcribed and preserved in digital form. What began as a personal archive is now evolving into a public project: The Atlanta Tapes. Through this site—www.atlantatapes.com—the voices of the past are being reintroduced to the present, offering a unique opportunity for historical and cultural rediscovery. This project is fundamentally about preservation and an invitation to engage critically with the raw, unfiltered narratives contained within these audio documents
Dedication to my Mom
Your decision to prioritize adventure and broaden our horizons, even when I was just a curious four-year-old, shaped my world. I cherish the memories of our journey touring 48 of the United States, and I'll always be thankful for your dedication in preserving those precious moments through your heartfelt letters to Nana and Grandad.
You embraced new ways to share our experiences, replacing pen and paper with the technology of the time – a stereo and microphone – a true visionary, sending analog audio cassettes throung the post to New Zealand 40 years ago, long before blogging, podcasts and instagram. A true pioneer!
Your courage to move to a new country, your ability in finding work abroad, and your unwavering commitment to creating a loving and supportive home – these are the greatest gifts.
Thank you, Mom, for everything.
