Summary
This sounds like a very personal and detailed update! It covers a wide range of topics, but here's a summary of the key points:
The speaker starts by describing the cold weather in July and mentions Brooke's visit to Dunedin, which was experiencing severe flooding. She then talks about a dinner party and an outing to see a play. There's a humorous anecdote about Brooke's unusual attire and another about someone being teased for smoking.
The speaker mentions sending a parcel and needing children's jersey measurements. She's also been following Richard Bay's scrapbook progress.
She expresses amusement about someone using an A1 speed and mentions being worried about Rachael not receiving birthday gifts. There's a comment on how well the children are doing academically.
The speaker then recounts a funny story about a Saudi Arabian prince's reaction to TV shows and his planned retaliation. She also shares an anecdote about a nervous violinist from her school days and a chance encounter with him years later.
There's a discussion about pop groups and tax, sparked by a local politician's comments after attending a concert by a band called "My Sex."
The speaker then shifts to a serious topic: the inquiry into a wrongful arrest. She describes the defense council walking out and her father's strong opinions on the matter, comparing it to Watergate.
She mentions a dinner party she hosted and an outing to see a dwarf act, where one of the attendees was very nervous. There's also a story about a couple who went to Queensland for the winter, with one experiencing a heart attack.
The speaker then talks about someone named Allison Dergen and a country singer Maria Dallas. She also discusses the Olympics and the small number of athletes going.
Allan was in Australia for swimming and did very well. There's a brief mention of Alan B leaving home and returning.
The speaker then describes a pop group called "My Sex" and the local politician's humorous reaction to their concert. She also mentions the ongoing inquiry into a wrongful arrest and her father's strong opinions.
Finally, the speaker talks about making a dressing gown and a running joke about her housekeeping allowance. She then transitions to her father's recent hospitalization due to fluid retention and the relief that it wasn't a heart attack. She mentions a specialist and the vestry's reaction to their new vicar's flamboyant personality and ideas for church events.
The tape ends with the speaker needing children's jersey measurements again, mentioning the smog problem in Christchurch, and her thoughts on a Denny La Rue concert and a local rugby team.
It sounds like a very eventful period with a mix of everyday life, social engagements, and reactions to current events!

Well, hi there, everybody.
Today is the 2nd of July, a very cold day. I've been trying to get this tape done for ages. I thought perhaps today, being so bad, I might get it done.
Our weather has been very cold indeed, much colder than last year because last year we had very mild weather right up until the week we left for the States when we had snow. This year, we've had lots of frosts, nice sunny days, but really very cold.
At present, the flu bug seems to have faded. They've stayed away; everybody seems to be relentlessly well. And I recall that I didn't get any gaming drinks. Now, nothing actually, when I was sick, came up occasionally to see how I was. And then went down the road to get fish and chip fritters. I didn't really want any food; I don't quite know what the matter was.
Now, I've got how I've been writing this down here for the last month. And if, once again, the table will be all bitty, well, you'll have to bear with me.
You mentioned on your last tape about the A-prints as well. Of course, we're having all the contributions you hear about. And they haven't decided yet whether, in fact, I don't even know whether it's coming yet, but they're busy deciding when we'll get it and if we'll be allowed to show it on the TV. I'm sick of it already. But however, we had to laugh at the plague of some Saudi Arabian who obviously has printed money has said that it isn't being shown so much. Cheaply, he intends to follow up with a film of Prince Andrew in retaliation, which I think might be rather a giggle.
However, well, we had Brooke come down about three weeks ago. It was rather funny. It was a core in which that was absolutely coming down in buckets. And the girl walked out the drive, and I sort of had a tail grump as she went past the French doors, and after, oh, it's normal. And then when I went up because they were whip-standing at the door, worst you had never seen a sight in all your life. She had catty, oh, Brooke-type overalls, you know, except the legs had been cut off round about the... Ha! By treatment and colour. And one leg had all been autographed in ink. She had a pair of sneakers on that really should have been thrown out years ago. And a funny black hat on her head anyway. We were delighted to see her and wondered if she could stay for a few days as she was winding off down Dunedin. And at this time, there were terribly bad bugs, very, very bad floods in Dunedin. In fact, Dunedin has been cut off there. The motorway has been shut, I think, come fell a month, must be a month or two years here. And I don't know that Stephen O'Shea yet, they're actually taking people from Amaru. They fly to Amaru, and then I think they go by fast or something like that down to Dunedin. But they really have had a bad time down near what would they... Abbott flood last year, but this is about their third flood in different parts round about Dunedin in the last year, might even be the fourth. But the poor devils are really having a very, very bad time.
Anyway, Brooke spent two or three days with us, and it was very nice. And we went out on the Thursday night with Dorothy and David. And Dorothy said, "Alfred," she laughed. David was quite out of your depth. David had really gone off it, squeamish, I think, not approachable. David and Dorothy always were... but David seemed to be quite odd, and he wouldn't have been introspective because he didn't talk at all or anything. Anyway, Dot said Alfred, what made her laugh was not so much the sneakers, but she had black catsuit on with pantyhose or just socks if you were under... but she... They were black, and they were all lace, and June was the same when she was here, where they all wore boys' out of the jeans and things like that. They don't know that such a thing as needed some problems, I don't think.
Anyway, that night we went out to court. We didn't stay for tea because it was a terrible night. It was the day she came, and it's a long way to drive back in the dark, especially on a bad night on that road, so we got back but had a late tea here. And then the next day, Ed was still passing down, and Dad was going out, and I was going to spend the day back getting to sleep. I could prepare on a five now for the weekends, and I don't have to and go out if we wish, and then Brooke thought she would go out to Leeds University to see a friend, and then she was going to go to... We've got the university here now. I've got... They're like, oh, it's some craft. They're not little shops actually, sort of all these things are set up in different rooms, pottery and they're doing jewelry and all this sort of thing, and theatre out there, and it's really quite a nice place, so she wanted to go there. And also, she wanted to go and see Claire versus Kramer.
So, at the date of going out, he took her at 10 o'clock. There is a square, I think, near about ten, that she could get the bus out to the... Yeah. Today, yeah. University. Well, I... I just had to Reno you, Dorothy, because I said, really, I don't think they'll need... wanted to take her to the square because she came down here, and she was all dressed to go. And I said, "John, that you're going to be freezing." "Oh no, I know she's desirably right." Well, she had on a pair of hair and pants that had definitely seen better days. They were sort of a blue or slumbly and very thin, lemony sort of things dragged into the ankles with sort of two-inch flolly bands. And, of course, with the leaded black socks and the sneakers up top, she had the thinnest blouse that... well, it hardly... And that was so-so in a funny old pen cardigan. And over the top of the lot, she had a black salt coat, which came down mainly to the ankles, but very thin. And I think it would probably be my grandmother's day in more than even nine, and it was just way right out. And anyway, there she was.
On top of her head, of course, was a beautiful black hat, as she'd worn coming over before, which was the flat brim, and the flat brim and the crown was sort of all flat. Look, I don't know, like a spice, you know, has a space thing, one of those that sit on the back of the head with black layers down under the chin. And right on the back was a gorgeous thick bow. Well, you have never seen such a sight in all your life. However, or she went well, it teemed all day, and I was really worried. I thought she's got to get saturated.
Anyway, Dad and David were going out to Nazi S Milligan and... We'd had our tea, and they were all set to go, and Viv arrived home at about half-past seven, I suppose it was. And I said, "Oh, Philip, you must be just so wet," and she said, "Oh no, I did get dried out." What she had... I don't know how many times she'd been wet and dried. She'd done all she'd wanted to see. She'd gone out to the university. It had a good hail, that Claire versus Kramer. In so everywhere way that she wanted to go, but oh, really, she was just... she's such a lovely girl, very, very like you to look at, very like you.
She wound off on the Saturday morning, which I wasn't very keen on. Dad and I both felt she should wait, and she... because Dunedin, the roads were closed. But I know off she went, and she must have got through somehow. And then we would have never heard any more, but she... Dad and I worried really all day about it because it just wasn't... And especially in the way she was driven, wasn't the time to be travelling in such heavy rain. And Dad all the way, he took her out to haunt, and because the star rolled on her way, and all the way was saying she shouldn't be going, but all hair was special, we just had to hear it all. Fatty, did she went, and that was steps.
By the way, I'd been meaning to ask you, admit every time I seem to take whatever I... we will never ever hear the end of that story about the bra thknobs. One of your types finished up with you on about them. We never ever got the story.
It was rather funny. I've been saying today for Dorothy that you'd come up smoking, and I thought that a p died when I said it. And anyway, one day, the thought couldn't manage it anymore. She said, "Look, it just isn't fair." She said, "Good sign, Sher in S," when she said he is died and had been going through agony over the last six weeks, we would not anticipate a cigarette. And I had to laugh. I thought my props gone through him in mind why there weren't mess buts every time they went, but it hadn't really dawned on me that they wouldn't s him. And however, they both still off and both of them... We're going... I'll never go back onto it. I think David seemed to be coping better than that would surprise me a bit, bit. She reckons it's easy for him getting out of the house. She's and she loves anybody coming in that smokes. I think that would make me ten times worse, but she sort of gasps up there by tail, I think.
That's right, head both of them keep on put soup and get what. Otherwise, the jealous wearing in lo territory over our there. She a job match as soon as she went over $300 per week. But she evidently must be going on to meet that girl at stage of good. Didn't think she was moving on there early, but of course, it would be typical she way her cap the weeks I sp up of her enough money. So get better or failed.
For now, I've decided to make up a parcel, which I will get away about at the end of September, beginning of October, first to assure me that it will be alright as long as I in it and whatever register and do the life. So would you please send any suggestions? Things that you would like, also. I would very much like you to just pop on a bit of paper via return mail, the children's measurements for jerseys. I'll knit them, but I think it would be better if I had their measurements from those last ones was sent, and I don't want to sort of try and measure the kids here, they would be the problem, and telling you would probably match the same as right, it just isn't worth the buy that would the price of able. I would tend to get them right, but just put it on a card or a piece of paper consent been by return mail so that I can get them done.
Out at Ra, they're making Richard Bay a fantastic scrapbook. It was a good going into it. The children have got to save up their pocket money apparently to send an email because they and so don't want to get it lost by sea, but it's really rather good. I think it'll be very good. It'll probably be nice for the children for the morning talk or whatever they fall them over there, and children here are thoroughly enjoying it, making it up. I think it's nearly finished, but I don't know how long away that'll be.
We had to laugh at you on A1 speed, however. It must be rather fun getting round on it. And probably, you're doing very well later. You've already taken off your fire because I catch the bike and so the not there, too.
We were quite intrigued about righteous bounty classes. Hope they're going to run back. I hope the holidays now are going... I'm sure they will be. You've got them, sorry that they haven't been doing such wonderful things over the holiday. It sounds nice. We've got the reports on that on Saturday with your letter, and we've been rather worried that Rachael hadn't got her your birthday guys or thought you would love for cross. I hope she could.
We actually, that Dad sat down here, here, and it said, "Here I am with a master with a degree in psych education and English." You've found it quite hard to understand the thes, however, the fact children are doing very well based doing very, very well too. He's not not mobile by the stretch management as he he's doing very, very well because that's our boy. Should be hours until I get to do it and in there, sles and gets through with good rats. It'd be nice to be like though.
Also, Neil and Grant are just so proud of you with the trophies. That's great, isn't it? I'm getting bigger and bigger. You're sure that one of these days if there's too well tu by then, that you'll be an a budding star and something. And then you'll get some a gold medal on Steve. How, I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate one anymore, and you're appreciating your hopesome will effectively be wonderful.
Had a lovely call, as I said in in Rachael's coat, I think for Margaret Spry. She chatted for quite a while. She said it was absolutely delightful to see you all and that you all looked so well. And she said that she'd found that in Mexico and her time over there that she'd noticed the heat very, very much. And I think you do, you probably don't notice it now, but we noticed it very much last year when we were over there right in the timeline is that we got to the stage all I came been very, very warm.
At Mount Helen Business terrible, isn't it? We wrote to our print in Seattle. I imagine they're getting some of the dust, even though that's quite a way across because of us it going so far, excuse me.
Last night on out we had a place up program on a Sunday night about the local lum. Localful happens last night it was honour we ready for a major earthquake and who maxed the most money out of credit cards. I never stayed with the credit card one. Dad said that there was no doubt who maxed the money of the answer and to be falling at them. Quiet cards are getting very much more like that a mirror than now think we're rapidly going to the way where we will be wanting to use them for everything.
But anyway, back to the earthquake one, it was really rather... I felt that a lot of old people living on their own, it might have been rather upsetting because I started off by saying that we just couldn't go on indefinitely and that we couldn't be far away from our thick one. They gave... I don't know if you ever saw the cutting, the thing in 1968 where Tobo was definitely being interviewed and it came and just saw and died out of sight. He announced, said we never find where went to that to hard. I just don't... they sometimes wonder whether it's a good thing. I know we've got to with prepared God and't think no matter how... But you I prepared. But it would be different at the time and you nobody really knows, you they would great. I know idea my guess was right but and go down with everything but I don't really think that you can do a certain afterwards some preparation very ible defence goes, but I don't know remains to be seen. I don't know whether it's a good idea to frighten unless there's so many people live on their own and nervous people that this sort of thing would worry them, which was perhaps unnecessary. We're not getting all your cuttings. Mr. Hear and Readmore and they all go out to you.
Touring brighten all that locked away Elri got away on then what think was it for? 20th, no 20th. I had a dinner party the said day before. And all came, which was a great success. I had the mo wine to start with because it was a terribly cold night. Everybody went off all they said it all farm but I spent the next few days writing out all my recipe for them and... And that was very was most. I for the one, you thought that was my.
However, had a nice evening. It was just Aileen and Tony in the LTn Reed Dorothy gave us and asked, we had a lovely time. Anyway, we went out on Friday to see LTn Reed Dwarf. Well, it's as funny as a fight. Rh was shaking like a leaf. Elsie would go anywhere, but Rich just got terrible of them nervous. The older he gets, he was 70 yesterday and I sent him a car, but the older he gets, he seems to get worse and he was shaking like a leaf and he's saying to Dad and... And we're on a DC. Right, I think and and that's all what at matter always says that're s and Dad's why are you're in such a hurry to get there, you know, oh well, they said, you know, I don't have this and I don't have that and oh look, he'd lost five pounds in the week. And you'd had to go to the doctor and the doctor given him something and else at least he was sleeping that he was absolutely a nervous freak.
Another couple, they got a lot of friends over there at the moment. And I've back Har Christ, which I think is's over in Queensland for the winter and... The couple had gone a week before it in region. However, half got, they only had a heart attack. And of course, this has upset reach all people go away and have heart attack and kids we have at home too, that you know, you can't suspect just because you could have a heart attack.
However, I've had a glitter under a card since and all they're having a wonderful time that the weather is around about 21, 22 degrees and at
